Spam & Suspicious Emails

Spam

You see it every day in your personal email and at your work email. Spam. Not only is spam cluttering your Inbox, it is unsolicited and potentially extremely offensive. Spam is also a tremendous waste of time.

To combat the increase in unsolicited emails, LLUH has implemented advanced spam filtering mechanisms to replace the native MS Outlook Junk Email features (do not use these native features as they are not supported).

Spam is inevitable and there is no way to completely stop it from coming. However, there are ways to combat it and minimize its impact on you. Below are resources to help you make your email as spam-proof as possible.

Suspicious Emails

Suspicious emails are unsolicited messages that have malicious intent.  It can be a phishing or scam email that uses scare tactics to trick you into clicking on a link, opening an attachment, giving your User ID/password, or giving other personal information.  There is often a sense of urgency for you to take action, whether to receive something (e.g., money, gift cards) or to lose something (e.g., money, resources, your reputation).  While the intent of phishing emails is to obtain sensitive information from you, the intent of scams is to receive some form of payment from you.  Note that phishing and scam emails may appear to come from your @llu.edu address to trick you into believing that your email account was compromised – that’s known as “email spoofing”.

When you receive suspicious emails, report it immediately to Information Services.  See the following guides for additional details.
