How Can Radiation Sources be Identified?

You need to become familiar with the signs and labels placed to alert you of potential sources of radiation (see Figure 1). Laboratories using radioactive materials have signs posted at all entrances, and on equipment and areas that may be contaminated. It is important that items labeled as radioactive (lab equipment, waste containers, drains, etc.) are not disturbed unless specific instructions have been given by the laboratory supervisor or by the Office of Radiation Safety. Similarly, shielding (lead bricks, containers, walls, and doors) should not be moved or changed without specific instruction. Some x-ray machines used for patient care are not labeled as radiation-producing machines, but are only to be operated by authorized personnel who will provide appropriate instructions to personnel working nearby.
