Emergency Situations
General rules to follow during any radiological emergency at the Proton Treatment Facility which involves the unintended exposure of an individual to direct proton beam radiation or secondary radiation within an interlocked area are:
- Terminate the beam to the area involved or facility shut down, if necessary.
- Minimize exposure to all individuals.
- Contact the Radiation Safety Officer, Medical Physicist and Oncology Physician on call immediately.
- If injuries (other than radiation related) are involved, seek medical help as appropriate, otherwise, try to maintain the accident scene as exactly as possible. Do not move items and try to record exact locations of any individuals involved.
See Appendix III for a list of persons and telephone numbers who should be notified in the event of an emergency.
