Dosimeter Distribution

At Loma Linda University/Medical Center, radiation dosimeters (badges) are distributed to series coordinators who are in charge of individual departments or areas. It is the responsibility of the series coordinators to distribute, collect and return these dosimeters in a timely manner. State regulations also require that any dosimeters that are assigned must be returned for processing.

Dosimeters may be used on a monthly or quarterly basis. Quarters are three-month time periods that begin on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. You will usually receive your dosimeters approximately one week prior to the beginning of a new monitoring period. On the first day of the monitoring period, the new dosimeters should be distributed to the employees in your area and the used ones collected. Each dosimeter has the beginning date of the wear period printed on it. A packing slip will be included and can be useful in distributing and collecting dosimeters. Dosimeters should be returned within seven days (and no later than two weeks) after the end of a wear period. They may be returned through intercampus mail (in a securely sealed envelope) addressed to the Office of Radiation Safety, LLUAHSC 101, or may be left in the labeled box located in the Security Control Center (MC B404).

If you are a series coordinator and are receiving dosimeters that are not needed or if you have a new employee, contact ORS promptly. To request a dosimeter for a new employee, please provide the complete name, social security number or employee ID number and birth date for this employee. New employees will also be required to complete a form listing any prior employers that monitored them for radiation exposure. This form will include a release form to allow for these records to be requested.

A dosimeter is assigned to the individual whose name appears on it. No one should wear a dosimeter that is assigned to another individual. If your series receives “spare” dosimeters, these may be assigned to employees who need one, but must be only worn by that employee during that monitoring period. Never let more than one employee wear the same dosimeter. Spare dosimeter assignments should be recorded on the “Temporary Dosimeter Monitoring Record.”
