Why are there different types of dosimeters?

There are three types of dosimeters that are in common use here at Loma Linda:

  1. The type “P” dosimeter measures penetrating x-ray, beta, and gamma radiation. It is used for both monthly and quarterly monitoring groups.
  2. The type “T” dosimeter is a type “P” dosimeter with an additional component that detects neutron radiation. This type of dosimeter is used for monitoring individuals that have the potential of receiving neutron exposure (e.g., individuals working with the LINACs or proton accelerator).
  3. The type “S” dosimeter, or finger ring, is a TLD that can be used for either monthly or quarterly groups. It is used to measure exposure to the extremities and should be worn on the hand that will receive the most exposure - with the white portion towards the source of radiation. The finger rings may be cold sterilized in whatever solution used in your area; however, they will be damaged if heat sterilized. Finger dosimeters are available in different sizes (small, medium, and large).

Body dosimeters should be worn at either the collar or the waist; whichever location is likely to receive the highest exposure.  For x-ray users wearing protective aprons, the badge must be worn at the collar outside the apron.
