Radioactive Material Package Delivery Policy

Security requirements for radioactive materials have made it essential that only authorized personnel with appropriate training receive and handle radioactive materials. This is not limited to radioactive materials within a laboratory, but also applies to radioactive materials packages that are delivered to an authorized user.

In addition to security requirements, the necessity of package monitoring needs to be considered. 10 CFR 20.1906 states that all required package monitoring shall be performed as soon as practicable after the receipt of the package, but no later than three hours after receipt if received during normal working hours.

Therefore, radioactive materials packages shall no longer be delivered to, or accepted by, individuals who are not directly authorized to possess the material ordered. Packages will not be left unattended in offices or labs. Individuals ordering radioactive materials should make every attempt to be present when such materials are delivered.

If an authorized individual is not present when delivery is attempted, the package will be brought to the Office of Radiation Safety. The ordering user will be notified. If unable to re-deliver the package within 30 minutes, the Office of Radiation Safety will complete the necessary package opening procedure. The package will then be delivered to the user as soon as possible.

Users who are repeatedly absent when delivery of a package containing radioactive material is attempted may face action by the Radiation Safety Committee.
