What is Radiation?
Generally, when the term "radiation" is used (and for the purposes of this booklet), it refers to what is more specifically known as IONIZING RADIATION . Ionizing radiation includes x-rays and gamma rays and also beta, alpha, and neutron radiation. The concept of RADIATION EXPOSURE can be compared to the exposure of film in a camera. When light is allowed through the shutter, it strikes the film, exposing it. When your body is subjected to radiation, you are said to be exposed. The amount of exposure is dependent on the type of radiation present, the intensity of the radiation, and the length of time you are exposed.
