Entrance to Controlled Areas

Access to the Proton Treatment Facility is controlled beyond the B-level reception desk. The following are requirements for access within the facility:

Patients, Visitors and Tour Groups - Access within the facility is permitted by special arrangement only. Patients are to be accompanied by medical personnel at all times except when changing or undergoing treatment. Patient family members are encouraged to remain in the Radiation Medicine waiting areas, but may be permitted past the reception desk by special arrangement. Visitors are not allowed except by arrangement with the LLUMC Department of Radiation Medicine. Visitors must be accompanied at all times by an official representative of the Department of Radiation Medicine. Any visitors who are allowed into interlocked areas must be accompanied by a representative who is monitored for radiation exposure. Visitors who are minors must provide written consent from a parent or guardian. No visitors under the age of 14 are permitted beyond the reception desk.

Employees - All employees whose duties require access to interlocked areas as frequently as once a month must receive a two hour course in accelerator radiation safety or demonstrate equivalent training. Personnel performing operations using the accelerator must have documented training on the systems in use. LLUMC employees who are not providing direct care to patients, performing site maintenance or direct operations on the Proton Treatment Facility systems are considered to be visitors.

Employees with access to interlocked areas must be monitored for whole body radiation exposure. Personnel who frequently handle activated components must be monitored for extremity exposure.

Visiting Researchers - Any individuals wishing to use the Proton Treatment Facility who are not employees or students of LLUMC or LLU may make arrangements with the Department of Radiation Medicine for beam time. Such individuals must be directly supervised by a representative of the Department of Radiation Medicine until all of the following requirements are completed:

  1. Two hour training course in accelerator radiation safety or equivalent.
  2. LLUMC orientation and safety training.
  3. Documented training in Proton Treatment Facility systems as appropriate.
