Educational Activities Under HIPAA
Although HIPAA imposes many new requirements for the protection of patient privacy, we still maintain the ability to share health information internally (that is, within the LLUH Organized Health Care Arrangement (OHCA)) in order to continue our pursuit of education, academic and clinical research and to fulfill our commitment to service excellence and quality patient care. Most information sharing outside the LLUH OHCA requires a valid written authorization from the patient. For information sharing for education and research within the LLUH OHCA, mechanisms are in place to facilitate the appropriate sharing of data (go to Supplemental Module "Requesting Health Data Within LLUH") and some research processes have been modified for alignment with privacy requirements (go to the "Investigator’s Guide to HIPAA" for more information).
Refer to the list of entities under LLUH OHCA on page 12 of the Notice of Privacy Practices.
Click on the modules below for information on the appropriate use of protected health information (PHI) related to educational activities.

Click the De-Identification of Data module above to learn how to de-identify data in accordance with Privacy Rule requirements.
