Outbound emails can be intercepted in transit and seen by unintended viewers. Therefore, the importance of encrypting emails containing confidential information to include protected health information (PHI) and not including such confidential information in the subject line of emails as that information is sent over the public Internet as plain text, even on encrypted emails. If there is a valid and approved business need to send PHI via encrypt the email message by adding the term [encrypt] to its subject line. All LLUH email users must comply with requirements and guidelines spelled out in the “LLUH and Core Corporations Acknowledgment of Email User Responsibility”.
