FAQ
- What is the DAISY Award?
A: DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.
The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by The Barnes’ Family, in memory of their son J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created the DAISY Award to recognize the extraordinary work nurses do each and every day.

- What is The DAISY Award within the Loma Linda University Health System?
A: The DAISY Award is presented to licensed nurses in recognition of their talent and dedication to the mission, vision and values of Loma Linda University Health. DAISY Award nominees and honorees personify LLUH’s remarkable patient experience, and those selected to receive the DAISY Award are recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community because of their clinical expertise and the extraordinary compassionate care they provide to our patients.
- How can I nominate a nurse?
A: We have three options available to nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award:
- OnePortal DAISY Page—on the left-hand menu there is an option titled “Nominate a Nurse”. If you are on campus, you can use the link below to place your nomination!
https://one.lluh.org/vip/General/Organizational-Initiatives/DAISY-Award/Nominate-a-Nurse - DAISY Nomination Form— we also have paper nomination forms available for your convenience. - Can I just nominate a name and not include a story?
A: We want your nomination to increase its value by providing a story of the nurse you are nominating, describing why you think this individual deserves the prestigious recognition of a DAISY Award. A story to explain why the nominated nurse exemplifies extraordinary care is a key component in the selection process.
- Who can nominate?
A: Anyone who experienced the extraordinary care of a nurse can nominate a nurse for a DAISY Award. You can be a patient, family member, employee, volunteer, or anyone who has an extraordinary story to tell.
- I want to nominate a LLUH employee that is not a nurse, can I nominate them?
A: The DAISY Award program is designed to honor licensed nurses who provided extraordinary care at one of LLUH’s facilities. If you want to honor a non-nursing LLUH employee, please feel free to use our nomination forms and we will be happy to send it to their supervisor.
- How many DAISY Honorees are selected in a year?
A: DAISY Honorees are selected twice a year from 7 different areas at LLUH. These areas are University Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Surgical Hospital, East Campus Hospital, Behavioral Medicine Center, Loma Linda University Medical Center—Murrieta, and Advance Practice Registered Nurses. Check the calendar of events for nomination and celebration info.
- How are DAISY honorees selected?
A: The DAISY Awards and Recognition Committee is comprised of representatives from The Magnet Department as well as staff nurses from different areas throughout Loma Linda University Health. The committee separates the nomination by areas, diligently looks at each nomination, reads each of the stories, and votes on a group of finalists who portray extraordinary nursing care and encompass the mission, vision, and values of LLUH. The selected final nominees are then presented to all nursing staff at their respected entities to vote on the winning story. (Note: all information that relates the story to a specific nurse and/or department are redacted before the committee reviews them)
- I want to be involved in the DAISY Awards program, how can I participate?
A: Your involvement is very important to us. Please send an email to NurseRecognition@llu.edu to tell us why and how you want to be involved with the program.
