Moment 4: When exiting a patient zone, after touching a patient

WHY:

  • To protect yourself and the healthcare surroundings from potential pathogens from the patient.

WHEN: (examples not a complete list)

  • After touching a patient or patient surroundings:  See Moment 1
  • After an aseptic/clean procedure:  See Moment 2.

TO PREVENT: Infection in HCWs and/or cross contamination of the healthcare environment and HCWs.

  • After touching a patient the HCW has the patient’s micro-organisms on their hands; these micro-organisms can be transferred to whatever the HCW touches next.
