Insurance Companies
Protected health information (PHI) must not be shared or released to life, auto or other insurance companies without a valid written authorization from the patient. Health insurance companies can only receive PHI without patient authorization if they are directly responsible for the payment and adjudication of a claim that a healthcare provider submitted on the patient's behalf. Only designated personnel must review appropriate systems to determine the health insurer's relationship to the patient and whether PHI is needed for the health insurer to pay a related healthcare claim.
