N-95 Respiratory Protection

N-95 respirators are tight fitting respiratory protection devices that provide a very high level of filtration against airborne particles. The edges of the respirator must form a secure seal around the nose and mouth, requiring each person to be “fit tested” to determine the appropriate make, model, and size respirator.

If you are required to wear an N-95 respirator for airborne protection against potential healthcare or occupational exposures, you will need to be fit tested annually.

Fit Test Process

The fit test process requires two steps:

  1. Complete the medical clearance form:  Fit Test & Medical Clearance Portal
    • Form must be completed from an on-campus computer or VPN connected computer
    • If off-campus, connect through one of the LLUH VPN options (if one does not work for you, please try the other options):
      • LLU Students and employees:  https://webvpn.llu.edu
        • Upon login, go to “Web Bookmarks” on the WebVPN dashboard
        • Go to the Fit Test Medical Clearance link
      • LLUH employees:  https://vpn.lluh.org/
        • Upon login, go to “One Portal” under Web Bookmarks
        • Go to “Frequently Used” and select “View All”
        • Select “Forms” from drop down menu
        • Select Fit Test & Medical Clearance Portal from available links
    • Login using your LLU username and password
    • Complete all required fields, scroll to the bottom and click submit; a pop-up window will confirm successful submission
    • Allow 2 business days for processing and approval of your medical clearance form
    • Once approved, you will receive an email with the upcoming fit testing dates and locations
    • Medical clearance is valid for 60 days from date of approval (must fit test within that 60-day window or submit a new medical clearance form)
  2. Attend an in-person fit test session where you will be fitted to a specific make, model, and size respirator
    • Select a session and location:  Fit Test Schedule
    • Your medical clearance is recorded electronically, so you do not need to bring any paper forms to the fit test session; please bring your LLUH ID badge
    • You must be clean-shaven to be fit tested (e.g., no facial hair is allowed to touch the sealing surface of the respirator)

Fit Test Results

Fit test results can be found on the Fit Test & Medical Clearance Portal.  Look here for:

  • Make, model, and size N-95 you are approved to wear
  • Documentation of your fit test date/proof of fit testing
  • Reminder:  Fit test is valid for 12 months from date of testing; you must have a valid fit test within the last 12 months if you are required to wear an N-95 for respiratory protection
