A: you will need 25 points from the CN-D renewal tally sheet every two years
A: No; but currently the expectation is maintain a minimum performance of a 3.0 on the annual evaluation scale year after year.
A: The only time an applicant is required to complete a QI, PI, EBP, or Research project is when a nurse is applying for CN-D status. A project proposal form must be completed and approved before starting the project. A CN-C applicant is not required to complete a project.
A: Application for Clinical Nurse C does not require an interview. For CN-D applicants, a 30 minute interview will be scheduled to highlight their portfolio and professional practice. The applicant will meet with members of the CAP Committee.
In addition, there is an opportunity for the applicant to voluntarily participate in a 30-minute meeting with the Magnet team to help prepare for the interview. The 30-minute meeting will be done on one’s own time and is not required but highly recommended.
A: Any CAP portfolios that have started prior to May 1, 2021 may continue to follow the previous clinical ladder packet. Prior version
A: Yes, if a nurse is transferring within the system their CN-C or CN-D status will transfer with a few exceptions:
- CN-C: For example, if a CN-C from Children’s Hospital is transferring to Murrieta, they will retain their CN-C status upon transfer but must meet the expectation of a 3.0 or above during their next annual evaluation period.
- CN-D: For example, if a CN-D from East Campus is transferring to Surgical Hospital, he/she has ONE YEAR from the time of transfer to adhere to the CN-D maintenance requirements, including submission of their maintenance tally sheet (achieving minimum of 25 points) to their new unit/department leadership.

Note: SSN-FIT nurses who are part-time/full-time are eligible for CAP. SSN-Per Diem nurses are not eligible. If a nurse transfers from another hospital to SSN-FIT they will still be eligible to transfer their CAP status and must follow the expected maintenance requirements
A: Yes, except when:
- Specified differently in the appendices
- Points were obtained more than 2 years from the CN-D application submission date.
For example, if you claimed points for being a Professional Governance Chair (July 2018 to June 2019) in your February 2020 CN-C application, you may re-use these point for your CN-D application, as long as you submit your portfolio before June 2021.
A: No, if a nurse is receiving 25 points for an educational degree such as a BSN the nurse may not combine points in the continuing education section if the CEUs are from classes utilized to obtain that degree.
A: New grads will be eligible to apply after successful completion of their RN Residency program. Applicants for a CN-C, a minimum 2-year nursing experience is required; for a CN-D, a minimum 3-year nursing experience is required. The residency year during the RN Residency New Grad program can be counted as one year.
