Areas of Responsibility

There are two primary, overarching goals that govern all of our activities:

  • To provide excellent nursing care to patients within the medical center who require our services.
  •  To improve and facilitate the movement of patients through a variety of departments within the medical center and thereby increase flow.

Within the parameters of the above goals, the following responsibilities are specific expressions of those goals:

  • To safely transport the traumatically injured and critically ill patient.
  • To respond to STEMI activations in a way that supports the staff and patient in improving quick and efficient care.
  • To respond to Hyperacute Stroke activations to assess and treat the patient in a timely manner thereby increasing the chances of an improved outcome.
  • To provide safe and effective sedation for the purposes of achieving diagnostic exams and interventional procedures.
  • To respond to code-blues and provide after-care for patients who have experienced a recent acute life threatening event.
  • To respond to Rapid Response calls in a way that conveys support to the staff and care for the best interests of the patient.
  • To provide a safe recovery environment for sedated patients.
  • To improve quality of patient care by being available to areas with limited resources.
  • To provide short-term patient care as needed.
  • To provide short-term relief or assistance to nursing staff throughout the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital.
  • To assume care of specific patient’s during emergencies, specialty procedures, and post-operative recovery.
  • To facilitate patient admissions, discharges and transfers in a timely manner as needed.
  • To efficiently assist with diagnostic exams and interventional procedures, thereby increasing the productivity of testing areas.
  • To be an educational and informational resource to staff, patients and family members in the following ways:
  • Be available for expert consultation and assistance in complex patient care situations.
  • Be available for routine questions regarding patient care, patient transport, sedation, diagnostic studies, and interventional therapies.
  • Reinforce patient and family education as well as providing information regarding the implementation of the plan of care.
  • Be available as an expert resource in emergency situations.
  • To demonstrate excellence and a high level of competency in critical care skills and specialty procedures.
  • To identify issues which may negatively impact patient care and positively assist with needed changes.
