Orientation & Competence

New employee orientation (Living Our Values) is coordinated by Staff Development, in collaboration with the Human Resource Management department.  The new employee receives information beneficial to their job function that is required by California state law, regulatory agencies, and LLUH policy.

In addition, department specific orientation is provided by each department to meet regulatory, safety and competency requirements. For additional information, please refer to Policy I-6 Orientation Requirements.

  • Face Masks are optional when attending LLEAP Classes
  • Class size may be restricted due to social distancing.
  • Does everyone have to attend a LLEAP class?
    A: Yes, access to LLEAP is only granted when your training has been completed and recorded in OWL.
  • How will I register for training?
    A: Check with your department manager/educator for specific LLEAP training information.
  • Who will conduct my training?
    A: A LLEAP Credentialed Trainer (CT).
  • Who do I contact if I still have questions?
    A: Please contact the following for additional information.

    • Staff Development, extension 33500, for inpatient clinical areas
    • Training Department, extension 55900, for ambulatory areas
    • Your department manager and/or educator

Orientation Policy I-6 requires new employees to complete all required Orientations within specific mandatory timeframes.

  • LOV (Living Our Values), GCO (General Clinical Orientation) and GNO A&B (General Nursing Orientation A&B) are online/eLearning courses.
  • These Orientation courses are set as a one-time OWL Requirement based on the employee’s position.
    • Once the employee’s OWL account is fully provisioned, the employee will be auto-enrolled in LOV, GCO and GNO A&B.
  • The Orientation sessions are NOT live-streamed.
  • They are online courses in OWL.
  • They must be completed within the Policy I-6 mandatory timeframes.
  • Use the following guidelines to allocate hours/time spent completing orientation courses. 
    • Living Our Values = 4 hours
    • General Clinical Orientation = 8 hours
    • General Nursing Orientation-A = 4 hours
    • General Nursing Orientation-B = 4 hours

Please note: In addition to these general orientations, Managers must ensure that the new employee completes all department specific orientations and competencies.
