Antimicrobial Stewardship
The Antimicrobial Stewardship Program was established in an effort to optimize antibiotic use and curb the emergence of resistant organisms in our community. Our purpose is to provide education to our trainees and clinicians on appropriate antibiotic use and optimal duration & dosing, monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns, and provide clinical guidance for management of infectious diseases.
Restricted Antibiotics
Restricted antibiotics at LLUMC require approval for use daily, weekends and holidays from 8am-5pm. Overnight, restricted antimicrobials that are ordered will be dispensed by the pharmacy until the next working day, at which time an approval will be required to obtain further doses.
To obtain approval for restricted antibiotics on weekdays, please refer to the ‘Antimicrobial Approval’ call schedule that can be found via the SmartWeb and contact the stewardship physician on call. Be sure to provide the patients name, MRN and a call back number to discuss why you are requesting use of a restricted antimicrobial.
On weekends & holidays, please contact the ID physician on call for general consults for antimicrobial approvals.
To review LLUMC procedure to obtain approval as well as the list & indications of restricted antimicrobials, please see the Johns Hopkins ABX Guide.
Johns Hopkins ABX Guide
uCentral is available free for clinicians and students at LLUH. This provides access to Johns Hopkins Antibiotic Guide as well as LLUH specific antibiogram, institutional clinical pathways, and diagnostic guidance. See the links below to register and download the mobile app.
Antibiogram
Antibiograms are a tool that provide local antimicrobial susceptibility for clinically important pathogens. It is meant to be used as a guide for empiric antibiotic use against certain organisms. LLUH’s clinical microbiology lab provide yearly updates to our institutional antibiograms while monitoring trends in antimicrobial resistance. To locate our antibiograms go to For Clinicians.
