LLU Zoom Recommendations and Etiquette

As we are using Zoom for meeting and video conferencing we thought that it would be good to offer up a few basic recommendations and review some points of etiquette.

  • When entering a large meeting please mute your audio. The host of the meeting can mute all participants and should do so for large meetings.
  • Start the meeting with your video on (if possible) so that the host and other participants will be able to tell who is in the meeting.  You can stop your video if you experience stuttering or buffering during the meeting.
  • Use the Gallery View (found in the upper right corner) to be able to see everyone in the meeting. For large meetings, there will be scroll arrows to cycle through all the participants.
  • Always remember to be professional. Act as if your microphone and camera are always on. There are many tales of embarrassing moments when meeting participants thought they had muted the mic or camera… you don’t want to be ‘that’ person.
  • Use the Chat feature to type in your questions so the host can see them. Be careful about using the chat to Everyone vs a private chat. See the comment above.
  • Consider using the Virtual Background (found in Video Settings) feature if the location you are meeting from is distracting or if you want to be discreet about showing off your home office.
  • When you are speaking try to look at and talk to the camera, not your computer screen. Direct eye contact with the camera will give a more engaging experience to the other participants.
