Emergency Department

Our Purpose

Loma Linda University Medical Center Emergency Department is a Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center for San Bernardino, California. The Emergency Department treats a population of roughly equal to 25 percent of the State of California, servicing 58,000 high acuity patients a year.

Loma Linda University Medical Center Emergency department’s nursing staff prides itself in evidence based practice and progressive nursing care. Our nursing staff consists of Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Licensed Vocational Nurses, and certified Emergency Department Technicians. They comprise a multidisciplinary care team that deals with specialized populations which would include; pediatrics, neurology, cardiology, geriatric, trauma, envenomation, and pre-hospital communication.

The Loma Linda University Medical Center Nursing Staff is always prepared for any patient that arrives in the Emergency Department. We care for patients with varying levels of illness from skeletal fractures, lacerations requiring stitches, pain of unknown cause, and medication refills to life-threatening conditions and patients needing resuscitation and stabilization, treatment of post resuscitation and immediate cardiac emergencies.

Our Emergency Department is divided into 3 areas of care, which include an adult Emergency Department, Pediatric Emergency Department, and a Clinical Decision Unit. The adult Emergency Department is then subdivided. These areas include a trauma area, cardiac area, monitored area, and general treatment area. Our Pediatric Emergency Department as well, is divided into a trauma area, separate rooms for monitored patients and a general treatment area. Our third area is our Clinical Decision Unit, which opened in 2005. Each area is staffed with experienced nursing staff with the experience and knowledge base for the area assigned.

Loma Linda University Medical Center Emergency Department also has an excellent training program for newly graduated nurses. As part of our training program, new nurses that are selected to participate in the program must go through extensive classroom training. Once this is completed, they are paired with an experienced emergency department nurse for 12 weeks of additional training in both adult and pediatric emergency nursing care.

Many of our nurses are also very active in the community and in health promotion. Their volunteer activities include; Ronald McDonald relay for children, Sheriff’s Air Rescue, HAZMAT teams, SWAT Medics, various Fire departments, and California Speedway. We also have nurses and E.D. techs in all branches of military and Homeland Security. These staff members have been deployed in support of Desert Storm, Ground Zero in New York after 9/11, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the hurricanes Katrina, and Rita.
