Our Purpose

Surgery frequently requires the use of specially designed portable X-ray equipment called C-arms.  The C-arm combines the convenience of instant still images with the ability to see live fluoroscopic video. Using the C-arm allows the surgeon to look inside the patient, just as with the permanent fluoroscopy equipment in Adult Radiology. Surgeons must hold a current California fluoroscopic certificate/permit. In addition, a skilled California-licensed Radiologic Technologist is required to operate the equipment.

The C-arm may be used for a wide variety of procedures, including:

  • Hardware placement / irrigation and debridement (bone)
  • Contrast studies of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder
  • Placement of deep brain stimulators
  • Placement of  Port-a-caths, Broviac catheters, and other types of central lines
  • Angiography / vascular imaging

The technologists in OR Radiology have five C-arms available for use.  Many times we have multiple cases occurring at once, and coordinating the use and operation of the C-arms is a large part of what our technologists do.

The OR radiologic technologists also are responsible for portable X-rays in OR, such as:

  • Exams in PACU and Pediatric recovery room
  • Images for lost surgical equipment or for cases with over-50 sponge counts
  • Various other portable X-rays within the OR arena

For surgeries occurring between 11:30 pm and 7 am, there is always an on-call technologist available to cover these cases.  Please page 1998 for the NOC technologist to facilitate after-hours OR cases requiring a radiologic technologist.
