New committee aims to advance LLUH environmental sustainability practices

Loma Linda University Health is taking strides toward a greener and more sustainable future with the launch of the Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC). This interdisciplinary committee, composed of leaders from across healthcare and education, along with engaged students and residents, will develop a coordinated strategy to identify and address environmental challenges.

The ESC will aim to conduct a comprehensive assessment of LLUH's systemwide environmental emissions, waste, and water usage. This assessment will inform the development of a strategic plan aimed at reducing the institution's environmental footprint. The complex task of calculating emissions involves gathering data from various sources, including facilities, fleet, investments, procurement, and travel.

According to a New England Journal of Medicine study, the United States healthcare sector generates 8.5 percent of total carbon emissions. These emissions exacerbate climate change, adversely impacting both physical and mental health. LLUH's current Strategic Plan reflects an organization-wide commitment to "reducing our carbon footprint and adopting other strategies to protect our God-given natural environment."

Jasmine Hutchinson, MSPH, director of Community Benefit for LLUH's Institute for Community Partnerships, said, "The reality is that a medical center operation like ours can generate emissions equivalent to a small city. The integration of environmental sustainability practices aligns with LLUH's mission of whole person care and our 120-year legacy of improving health in the Inland Empire."

In 2024, the committee plans to increase awareness among all employees regarding current emissions and introduce ways to participate in solutions. Task forces will be strategically deployed to address specific sustainability challenges, ensuring a targeted and effective approach. The ESC hopes to establish an organization-wide "Green Team" of passionate employee volunteers. This team, modeled after departmental Safety Coordinators, will champion positive environmental and waste management practices within their respective departments, promoting sustainability principles across LLUH's organizational system.

"Environmental sustainability is all of our responsibility, and it's important for all of us to apply an environmental lens to our current work and brainstorm suggestions for continued improvement," Hutchinson said.

This journey toward environmental stewardship is crucial for our institution, local community, and the global landscape. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to actively participate in helping LLUH usher in a future where health and sustainability thrive together.
