IHPL receives Shared Services’ customer service excellence recognition

Institute for Health Policy and Leadership director

Loma Linda University Health’s Institute for Health Policy and Leadership received the Shared Services Division’s Customer Service Excellence recognition for the fourth quarter of 2022. IHPL produces several important policy resources, and it seeks to serve LLU Health by providing evidence-based information and education on relevant health policies to our students, residents, faculty, staff, and leadership; promoting interdisciplinary, scholarly collaboration among LLU faculty on topics related to health policy; and enhancing the LLUH’s national reputation.

Wonha Kim, MD, MPH, IHPL director, says that the Institute has three major strategic priorities — mental health, oral health, and food insecurity. Regularly produced resources and engagements include:

  • Monthly policy briefs
  • Monthly issue briefs
  • Bimonthly health policy blog articles
  • Monthly Faculty Scholars meetings
  • Quarterly Spotlight on Health Policy events
  • Quarterly policy presentations to the LLUHC Board
  • Engagements with students, residents, and other learners
  • Engagements with various community partners

“During 2022, we increased educational interactions with students and medical residents, had strong faculty engagement in our Faculty Scholars Program, and saw a 286% increase in the number of people visiting our website to utilize the policy resources made available on our website,” Dr. Kim says.

The Institute has continued its important work despite cutting five staff positions during the pandemic-related budget cuts implemented in spring 2020, leaving Dr. Kim as the sole employee. A part-time graduate student assistant position was recently added back to the IHPL team.

“IHPL continues to produce important policy resources,” said Richard Hart, MD, DrPH, Loma Linda University Health president. “It’s a small shop, and it does a great job of informing us and monitoring activities.”
