Got faith?

Category:

He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly, I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:20 NIV)

We constantly face many challenges in the fast-paced and often demanding postmodern world. Whether it's the pressure of academic expectations, the complexity of patient care, or the emotional toll of witnessing suffering, it can all feel insurmountable. In these moments, it's easy to become overwhelmed and discouraged, questioning our abilities, purpose, and the power of God.

In Matthew 17:20, Jesus offers a profound truth that can transform our perspective. He invites us to keep trusting God even when God's power or presence may be unavailable. Like the father who came seeking Jesus' healing help for his child (Matthew. 17:14-17), people often encounter us as ineffective surrogates. When the disciples ask Jesus why they couldn't be conduits of His healing power, He tells them they did not have faith. We look to each other, and others look to us without considering that we, too, are learning how to traverse heartache, disappointment, and doubt.

Jesus compares faith to a mustard seed — one of the smallest seeds known at the time. Despite its minuscule size, the mustard seed has the potential to grow into a large, sturdy tree. Similarly, Jesus tells us that even the tiniest amount of faith can move mountains and make the seemingly impossible possible. How? The tiniest opening allows God to enter and act! When we open our faith, God moves the unmovable.

This message is especially poignant for us at LLUH. Our work often requires us to navigate challenging circumstances and confront obstacles that seem overwhelming. But Jesus reminds us that our faith is powerful, no matter how small it may be. It can move mountains — to overcome obstacles that stand in the way of healing and wholeness.

So, what does it mean to have faith as small as a mustard seed in our healthcare education and delivery context?

It means trusting God's provision and guidance, even when we feel ill-equipped or inadequate. It means believing that every encounter is an opportunity for God to work through us, bringing healing and hope to those in need. It means persevering in the face of adversity, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.

As faculty members and students in a university healthcare environment, let us cultivate a resilient and unwavering faith. Let us confidently approach our work, knowing that all things are possible for those who believe.

Remember that even the most minor acts of kindness and compassion ripple out, transforming lives and bringing about healing in ways we never imagined.
