Cloverleaf repurposing

We have received many inquiries about the progress on repurposing the Cloverleaf towers. Prior to moving to TMC, we began a specific process to determine how the Cloverleaf space can be utilized to support our patients and staff. The assessments of space were carefully reviewed by leadership to determine the best financial and operational decisions. We will continue to evaluate additional services in the coming months. Updates about repurposing efforts will be shared in future editions of News of the Week.

Process:
Assessments of each space and the potential options of repurposing each area have involved comprehensive analyses in helping us understand how the space can best be utilized to help support staff and our patients. Administration and Finance continuously review these assessments to determine what would be best for the future of patients and staff from an operational perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Why aren’t we using the Cloverleaf Towers for inpatient use?
    • The Cloverleaf Towers do not meet certain building code requirements for buildings used for inpatient care. However, the 700/800 towers were built after the initial construction of the Cloverleaf Towers, and they still meet the code requirements.
  • How are we keeping inpatients in the Cloverleaf Towers on the 8th floor?
    • While the 8th floor is licensed as an outpatient observation unit, we have been utilizing the space for inpatients. The state Public Health Emergency issued an All Facilities Letter (AFL) that allows hospitals to flex spaces to accommodate the increased number of patients hospitals have seen. With the AFL soon to expire, we submitted new flex requests to the state for permission to continue using the 8th floor for inpatient use. If the request is denied, the 8th floor will go back to strictly outpatient observation use.
  • How are projects being funded?
    • The Children’s Hospital recently received approval for $135 million in funding from California Health Facilities Financing Authority (CHFFA); these funds will be used for many of the Children’s Hospital projects noted above. Operational dollars have been allotted for the other projects through strategic planning efforts with Finance and Administration.
  • Why are there not more offices available?
    • While assessing the potential options for each space within the Cloverleaf Towers, the team must ensure that certain codes are met. A key concern is having a certain amount of support space available for the operations of the space. Many of the previous offices will be utilized as support spaces for the department moving in.
  • How can I request additional space for my department?
    • Submit your requests through the Service Portal by clicking “Space Request.”
